“We have the largest population between North America and New Zealand, but are nonetheless a fragile island society with sharply limited resources. We have unique cultural traditions and a unique environment.”

The Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Plan – the state’s first sustainability plan since the 1970s – will be premiered at the Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Summit.
The Hawai‘i 2050 Plan emphasizes the triple bottom line of a sustainable economy, environment and society, symbolized by our summit theme of Nā Lei o Ka ‘Āina, or “The Lei of the Land.”
Hawaii’s beautiful lei are created from flowers and plants from our green fields and hills; lei are marketed in our state and across the world; and lei are an integral part of our special Island culture.
In addition to the presentation of the Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Plan, the summit will feature several must-see speakers:
- The Honolulu Advertiser’s Teen Panel on the hopes of youth for a more sustainable Hawaii and what they believe will take to achieve it.
- An in-depth analysis of the Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Survey, the first-ever scientific statewide poll about people’s attitudes toward sustainability.
- Keynote speech Terry Tamminen, architect of many of California’s groundbreaking sustainability policies and practices, on channeling the will of the community, businesses, environmental groups and politicians to move toward sustainability.
