Sustainable Economy

Hawai‘i’s physical isolation, reliance on imports for food and supplies, and economic dependence on tourism makes our state highly sensitive to national and global economic conditions. The downturn of Japan’s economy in the 1990s, the September 11 terrorist attack, and recent natural disasters in the United States and abroad have had a significant and adverse impact on our economy. And while the arrival of nearly seven million visitors annually creates an abundance of jobs, many of them are low-wage positions that require our residents to take on two or even three jobs to survive.

Hawai‘i needs a diversified, vibrant economy with a skilled and engaged workforce. Only then will we be able to meet the needs of the 21st century and create a desirable place for current and future generations to live, work, and play.

Hawai‘i 2050 strives to ensure that the state’s economy is well diversified and sufficient to provide Hawai‘i residents with economic opportunities, including earning a living wage, to live a sustainable lifestyle.
